5 Things to Talk About with Your Fiance Before Your Wedding | Marriage Advice | Arizona Wedding Photographer
As an Arizona wedding photographer, it’s an understatement to say I’ve seen a lot of marriages. And that’s a wonderful thing! Getting married is a great experience, but it’s not just a single moment. It’s the rest of your lives! So, there’s a few things that you should discuss with your partner before tying the knot. Here’s a list of 5 pieces of marriage advice - things that you should talk about before your marriage.
1. Finances
Okay, this one is tricky, but discussing it before the marriage is some very good advice! This isn’t just about how much money you have in the bank. You need to ask the hard questions! Are the two of you going to have one joint account? One joint account and two personal accounts? How do you two feel about having savings built up? Who tracks the finances? How are large purchases handled?
As you can see, getting a handle on how you two approach finances will take away a lot of potential pain in the future.
2. Kids
Children are truly gifts! But, do both of you feel the same way about kids? Talking about kids long before the wedding is a good idea. If one of you wants children, but the other doesn’t, this is a bigger problem than just a simple choice of paint colors!
But, there’s even more! Who’s going to work? Or will both of you work and pay for daycare? Is your family engaged in the idea of you having kids? Or will you two be on an island relying on friends for help? What about discipline - who handles that? The deeper you dig into this issue will reveal more and more about your values and the family life you will have once married!
3. Religion
Most people talk about their faith long before getting married. So, you’ll know if you’re compatible on the overall issues. But, there’s the smaller issues that should be talked about that are just as important. How are church or other religious gatherings handled in your marriage? Do you attend religious activities weekly, or just occasionally? How do you and your spouse feel about tithing? How do your beliefs affect your opinions on important matters?
Churches are more than just a building, they’re a community. How active are you in your group of believers? Are you not only attending, but also doing extra mission or self study work on the side?
A big question to ask - are you having a religious, semi-religious, or secular wedding? Knowing how much importance the two of you give to the place of religion in your wedding is amazingly important. And, for my Arizona clients, Meander’s wedding photographer and all inclusive wedding service can cater to whatever your desires are for your ceremony!
4. Pets
A really big piece of marriage advice, especially if you count your pets as your children, is to know how the two of you feel about pets in your marriage? If your partner only wants a dog, but you’re a cat/horse/snake person, then some compromises will need to be made .Or, maybe if your pet is your child, maybe there is no room for compromise! Be sure to talk about pets before you roll down the aisle!
5. The Five Year Plan
This is a good thing for anyone to know, let alone two people who are about to be joined together for the rest of their lives. Taking a look at where the two of you want to be in the next 5 years is super important. If the two of you have plans that go in the same general direction, then there shouldn’t be much of an issue! But if your goals are far off from each other, how will you handle supporting each other in those goals and where do you make compromises or stand firm on issues? This will help your marriage get off to a great start when you can work together to achieve an end goal you’ve both set!
